Austin Area Receives 1-2 Inches Of Hail After Severe Storms: NWS
Portions of the Austin area received up to 2 inches of hail from Wednesday's overnight storm, which marked the fourth time in the regions history to receive hail damage on March 25.
NWS Austin/San Antonio reports 1.5 to 2 inches of hail stones were reported in south, central and northeast Austin Thursday morning. The hail was a result of the severe weather system that rolled into Central Texas late Wednesday.
Keith White, a meteorologist for the weather service, told Patch the hail damage Thursday morning is one of four coincidental events where the Austin-Travis County region received hail on March 25. The last reported dates were in 2009, 2005 and in 1993.
In 1993, the city had more than $125 million in damages from 1-2 inches of hail, $100 million in 2005 from 1-2 inches of hail and $165 million in 2009 from 2-3.5 inches of hail. At this time, it is not clear how much Thursday's hail damage will cost the city.
White said it's purely coincidental for hail damage to occur on the same date over a period of time, but says hail stones occurring during severe weather around March is not.
He said Central Texas is currently under La Nina weather conditions, which increases the chance of severe weather, including hail, during spring season.
"We can definitely expect more severe weather like what we saw Monday and Wednesday throughout spring," White said.
NWS reports the Austin area was under a tornado watch Wednesday night as the severe storms rolled into the region; however, there were no reports of tornado touchdowns or dangerous wind gusts. Severe hail was all that was reported by residents.
Both Travis and Williamson counties only received about 0.5 inch of rain, the meteorologist said.
White said the reason why the area didn't receive as severe weather like Monday was due to a cold front moving into the region. He said the front halted any severe weather from impacting parts of Austin Wednesday night into early Thursday.
The Austin area is in for drier, sunny weather Thursday and Friday with breezy temperatures ranging in the mid-70's and low 80's, the meteorologist said.
White said there is some uncertainty in next week's forecast regarding how long the wet weather will stick around, but the meteorologist encourages residents to check local weather reports when information becomes available.
